A Dazzling Tribute to an Iconic Landmark
Presented at Light Night Leeds 2017, Harlequin was a breathtaking audiovisual projection mapping show that transformed the iconic Queen’s Hotel. This vibrant spectacle celebrated the hotel’s 80-year history and its deep connection to the city’s heritage, inviting audiences on a joyful journey through bold patterns, dynamic color, and immersive sound. Kindly supported by Aviva, Harlequin lit up the Leeds skyline, turning one of its most recognizable buildings into a living, breathing artwork.
The Brief
Bringing History to Life Through Light and Sound
The Queen’s Hotel has stood as a symbol of elegance and grandeur in Leeds for eight decades. To mark this milestone, NOVAK was tasked with designing a projection mapping display that honored its rich history while embracing the energy and creativity of Light Night Leeds. The challenge was to craft a visually stunning experience that would captivate audiences while seamlessly integrating with the hotel’s distinctive architecture. The final projection needed to be bold, celebratory, and uplifting—bringing together past and present in a way that felt both timeless and contemporary.

Our Response
A Joyful Explosion of Pattern and Motion
NOVAK created a kaleidoscopic audiovisual display that pulsed with energy and movement, covering the Queen’s Hotel in an ever-shifting tapestry of color and form. Inspired by the vibrancy of harlequin patterns, the projection unfolded like a living artwork, rhythmically shifting in perfect harmony with a dynamic soundscape. By combining precise projection mapping techniques with a playful, celebratory aesthetic, Harlequin transformed the Queen’s Hotel into a beacon of light, joy, and nostalgia. The installation not only paid homage to the building’s storied past but also cemented its place at the heart of Leeds’ thriving cultural landscape.
